Tennessee Valley Authority officials are asking customers throughout the Southeast to voluntarily reduce power consumption beginning 4 p.m. today as an approaching cold front is expected to increase electrical demands.
TVA’s bulk electrical system remains stable and secure, the company reported Thursday, but peak power demand is expected to occur when regional temperatures drop into the single digits. Power demand is projected to exceed 31,000 megawatts. Another peak demand will occur Friday morning, the company said in a release, when loads are expected to peak near 33,000 megawatts.
In comparison, the demand was just below 32,500 megawatts on Jan. 7, the height of this month’s first outbreak of frigid temperatures.
Temperatures are expected to plunge and remain below normal through early next week.
