The trial of a man accused of robbing a downtown Columbus bank last year began in Lowndes County Circuit Clerk this morning.
Ashby Barton is accused of robbing Renasant Bank on Feb. 9, 2014. Barton, a Winona resident, was 25 at the time of the alleged incident.
Columbus police say that after entering the bank, he handed a teller a note demanding money. Authorities have declined to say how much cash he left with.
He surrendered to authorities at Cade Hill Counseling Services on Main Street, where he had checked in earlier in the week. Authorities say he later tried to escape.
He faces two felonies: robbery and escape.
A jury was being picked this morning. Testimony is expected to begin Wednesday.
