STARK-VILLE – A third suspect is behind bars in connection with an Aug. 22 shooting on South Montgomery Street that left a man critically injured.
Gabriel Blanchard-Dyson, 19, of Starkville, is charged with attempted murder, a Thursday press release from Starkville Police Department said.
Blanchard-Dyson was arrested at about 5 p.m. Thursday in a relative’s home on Lamont Lane in Oktibbeha County by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force after a search that spanned several neighboring counties, Capt. Tyler Davis, who oversaw the investigation, told The Dispatch.
On Aug. 22 officers responded at about 9:50 p.m. to reports of gunshots at the Block Apartments on South Montgomery Street. A male victim was found shot while out walking his dog with his wife in the nearby parking lot of the Social Block Apartments on Locksley Way.
Marshall Overstreet, 21, of Starkville, allegedly shot through the fence that separated the two properties and hit the male victim because he thought he was someone else he intended to shoot.
The victim was in critical condition at the time and is continuing to recover from his injuries, the press release said.
Overstreet was arrested Aug. 24 at a relative’s home on Southgate Drive off old Highway 25 and charged with attempted murder.
During an Aug. 27 press conference, SPD Chief Mark Ballard said that investigators believed Overstreet did not work alone and that additional arrests were expected.
Jaylon Ware, 21, of Starkville, turned himself in to SPD the next day and was also charged with attempted murder, Davis said.
Through their investigation of the incident, Davis said evidence, including witness testimony and nearby surveillance footage, helped identify Blanchard-Dyson and Ware’s involvement in the shooting.
Davis would not specify the extent of Blanchard-Dyson and Ware’s involvement in the shooting.
All suspects are being held at Oktibbeha County Jail. Overstreet’s bond is set at $5 million. Lane’s bond is set at $2 million and Blanchard-Dyson’s bond was not set as of press time Friday.
SPD’s investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible, Davis said.
Anyone with further information about the case is asked to contact Starkville police at (662) 323-4131 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
