ARTESIA – A man wanted for a weekend drive-by shooting is behind bars after turning himself in Tuesday.
Jalen Vashad Brewer, 24, of Artesia is accused of firing several shots from his vehicle that hit a vehicle and an occupied dwelling.
Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on Thompson Street Sunday where a victim said Brewer had pulled up in front of the house in a gray Dodge Charger and started arguing with the victim over money. During the argument, Brewer allegedly fired six or seven shots from his vehicle while the victim retreated toward the tree line at the back of his property.
Bullets struck a vehicle owned by the victim’s mother, a sheriff’s office press release said, and several hit the home, which was occupied by an adult and two children at the time.
One bullet penetrated the garage door and ricocheted off an exterior door leading into the house from the garage, the press release said. Deputies found another bullet hole in a front bedroom window.
No one was injured, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch.
As Brewer drove from the scene, a witness walking up the street saw the Charger drive by and positively identified Brewer as the driver.
On Tuesday, detectives contacted Brewer by phone, and he turned himself in later that day.
Brewer was released Wednesday from Lowndes County Adult Detention Center after posting $75,000 bond, Hawkins said.
