A stolen vehicle led Columbus police on a chase Friday evening that crossed county lines, ending in an arrest and the vehicle being returned to its owner within an hour.
Koby Mclean Brown, 24, of Starkville, was arrested on charges of motor vehicle theft, felony eluding and driving with a suspended license, along with numerous traffic violations, Chief Joseph Daughtry told The Dispatch Saturday.
Daughtry said the incident started at about 5 p.m., when a car was stolen in the 1500 block of Second Avenue North as the vehicle’s owner was picking up a relative from a day care facility. The owner was able to track the car with their cell phone and called the police to give them a description of the vehicle, Daughtry said.
Officers that were on duty responded to the call, Daughtry said, spotting the vehicle on when it got off of Highway 82 at the Shell station at Plymouth Bluff.
When the officer turned on their lights, the car sped off, Daughtry said, leading officers on a pursuit that ended at Jesse Road in Starkville. Daughtry said CPD arrested Brown, recovered the stolen vehicle, and the owner was en route to get the vehicle back within an hour.
Daughtry said Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Starkville Police Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol assisted CPD in pursuing Brown.
“It just goes to show you that when we work together, what we can accomplish,” Daughtry said. “No officer was hurt, no civilians were hurt. We were able to catch him and take him into custody without incident. I just want to thank those agencies that I mentioned for their support.”
