Starkville’s annual Christmas parade will usher in the “Best Christmas Ever” for the city when it rolls downtown on Monday evening.
Paige Watson, special events and projects coordinator for The Partnership, said this year’s parade will begin at 6 p.m. and feature more than 70 participating groups, with Mayor Lynn Spruill as the grand marshal.
“The Starkville Christmas parade is a longstanding tradition,” Watson said. “We invite all community members and families to come enjoy the evening with us as we kick off Christmas season in Mississippi’s College Town.”
The parade will begin on Russell Street, turn west onto Lampkin Street, turn north onto Montgomery Street, continue West down Main Street, turn south on Washington Street and then east on Lampkin Street to conclude.
Though the parade itself will begin at 6 p.m., Watson said Russell Street will close and become one-way at 4 p.m. as parade lining up begins near the Cotton Crossing shopping center.
Jennifer Prather, interim CEO for The Partnership, said this year’s theme is the “Best Christmas Ever” to celebrate Starkville’s accomplishments.
“We’re having the Best Christmas Ever as a way to celebrate the recognition from Mississippi Magazine as the best place to live in Mississippi,” Prather said.
Watson said the parade will also feature Santa Claus, who will ride on the Starkville Rotary Club float at the end of the parade procession.
Prather said that’s one of the reasons the parade is a special event for Starkville.
“The Christmas parade is an event we look forward to every year because it’s a great celebration of all the different people and groups that make up our community,” Prather said. “It’s also a great opportunity for everyone to see Santa, sometimes for the first time.”
