STARKVILLE — A more than 90-minute standoff involving a suspect, Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Starkville Police Department ended peacefully Monday with an arrest and no injuries.
SPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Brandon Lovelady identified Covy Cook as the suspect.
Lovelady said a MHP trooper attempted to stop a car Monday afternoon on Highway 182 when the vehicle fled to an apartment complex on Ruth Road.
At the apartments, there was a verbal exchange between Cook and the trooper, during which the suspect dropped a firearm, Lovelady said.
Then the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence.
SPD’s SWAT unit took over the scene at about 1:12 p.m., Lovelady told The Dispatch. An SPD negotiator engaged the suspect and successfully negotiated surrender without further incident at about 2:45, he said.
Lovelady said Cook was taken to Oktibbeha County Jail. MHP will file charges against Cook, and there are no additional charges expected from SPD, he said.
MHP did not confirm the charges by press time.
