Officials retired murder charges against Neal Anthony Anderson Monday due to a lack of evidence against the Starkville man.
Starkville Police Chief Frank Nichols recommended the charges against Anderson, 28, be retired to file after he was arrested Friday at Camelot Apartments in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old Dacorian K. Coleman.
Investigators are now turning their attention to possible armed robbery charges associated with the incident. A press release states SPD has identified persons of interest and “arrests are forthcoming.”
Nichols made his recommendation during Monday’s Starkville Municipal Court session.
“Although we are pleased with the outcome, we are truly saddened by the loss of a young life in our community. We extend our thanks to the Starkville Police Department for its thorough investigation and appreciate its concern for our safety,” said Austin Vollor, Anderson’s attorney, in a statement.
Officers responded to 1040 North Montgomery St. about 7:30 p.m. Friday in response to reports of shots fired in the area.
Upon arrival, law enforcement agents found Coleman on the ground, fatally wounded.
He died at the scene.
