Severstal has resumed operations at its Columbus steel plant following a power outage caused by last week”s severe storms, the company said Friday.
Power at the plant was cut April 27 during the deadly storm that spawned an estimated 305 twisters across the South. Tennessee Valley Authority lost several main power transmission lines, and brought a nuclear plant offline, as the storm rolled across the South.
Power was restored to much of Columbus and Lowndes County later on April 27-28, but large power users including Severstal remained offline.
Severstal produces 1.5 million metric tons of rolled steel annually, and is undergoing an expansion to double its capacity to 3 million metric tons.
TVA was slowly bringing the plant online this week, returning power to different areas, a spokesperson said Monday. The plant was operating at a slightly reduced capacity Friday but was expected to resume full operations shortly, Dow Jones Newswires reported Friday.
Power was also expected to be fully restored to Nucor Corp.”s steel plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., by the end of this week, according to steel trade sources.
