One man is dead after a Saturday shooting in Steens that is being investigated as a “Stand Your Ground” case.
Zackery Mixon, 39, of Steens, was killed in a shooting at about 3:51 p.m. at a home on Highway 12, according to a text Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant sent to media outlets.
Mixon, who was living in a camper on the property, got into a verbal altercation with his girlfriend and allegedly attempted to force his way into her home, a Saturday press release from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said.
A family member, who feared for their life according to witnesses, shot Mixon in the upper arm. Deputies were already en route to the scene when E-911 alerted them that shots had been fired. The family member called 911 and tried to render aid to Mixon, but he later died from his injuries, the release said.
Other family members witnessed the attack and shooting, the release said. The investigation is ongoing.
