Two New Hope High school students were arrested Thursday on school property in separate incidents, one of which allegedly involved a 17-year-old possessing a gun on school grounds.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch a parent called the school after lunch and talked to one of the principals, saying a student threatened to fight and shoot another New Hope High student after the school day ended.
School staff conducted a search of the student’s car and found a gun inside, Hawkins said. Hawkins said the student claimed his parents left the gun in the car and he had no prior knowledge of it.
The student was detained by a school resource officer until LCSO investigators could arrive, Hawkins said. The student was then arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school property, a felony, and taken to the Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Center, Hawkins said.
In a separate incident, Hawkins said another student, whose age he could not confirm, was arrested by a school resource officer before lunch for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest following an altercation between two students.
The arrested student also was taken to the Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Center.
No one was injured in either incident, Hawkins said.
Lowndes County School District Public Information Officer Adam Minichino told The Dispatch in a text message that the district would not comment on either arrest as of press time Thursday.
