The trial of an Oktibbeha County woman accused of killing her husband while the couple hunted last year has been continued until the winter term of Oktibbeha County Circuit Court.
Verina Marie Childs, 38, of 3875 Jeff Peay Road, is accused of shooting and killing Douglas Childs while the pair hunted in November 2009 off Hawkins Road, near the Choctaw County line. Childs” trial has been continued several times, most recently on Monday, as both sides of the case wait on evidence and expert results from the ongoing investigation. Her new trial date is Jan. 31, 2011.
In other court business this week, a hearing scheduled Tuesday for a Sturgis man charged with capital murder did not take place. Instead, motions for 49-year-old Archie Quinn, of 3233 Craig Springs Road, will be heard Nov. 19. Quinn”s case is scheduled for trial Jan 31, 2011.
Quinn is charged with capital murder, burglary, aggravated assault and shooting into a dwelling.
Prosecutors contend Quinn brandished a shotgun on Sept. 28, 2008, and broke into the Sand Creek Road home of 45-year-old Terry Johnson. Quinn is accused of shooting Johnson and shooting and killing 35-year-old Stacy M. Gray.
After the shooting, Quinn allegedly left the home and encountered Oktibbeha County Sheriff”s Office deputies who were responding to the scene. Quinn then stopped his vehicle in the road and shot himself, the Sheriff”s Office said at the time. Both Johnson and Quinn survived their injuries.
