The three-day Magnolia Independent Film Festival begins Thursday at Starkville Hollywood Cinema and features numerous film screenings, red carpet events, workshops and opportunities for residents to meet filmmakers.
This year’s film selection features a number of genres, including experimental, science fiction, comedy, horror and drama.
“We are excited to have such a variety of films this year. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy all of the events and the films that the festival will feature,” said festival chair Angella Baker in a release.
Thursday’s events begin at 7 p.m. and feature a thriller by Austin Wilson, foreign drama short films and a ghost story directed by Kevin Boon, a Penn State University professor of English and film.
A red carpet event begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and the night’s feature screenings are a comedy directed by Mississippi filmmaker Kelly Buckholdt and a Norwegian drama directed by Jan Vardoen.
A meet-and-greet is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at 929, in which attendees will learn how filmmakers made their art.
Saturday’s movie list features foreign films, a horror short and a drama directed by award-winner Rob Underhill.
Following the screenings, award-winning filmmaker and actress Wendy Keeling will present a workshop on navigating film festival circuits as a filmmaker, which is free and open to the public.
Another red carpet event featuring all filmmakers, casts, crews, Starkville Area Arts Council board members and Magnolia Independent Film Festival staff will follow at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday’s night lineup features Mississippi filmmakers, two foreign dramas and a short story about life and its lessons.
An awards ceremony will follow at the conclusion of the final film.
