A Steens house burned to the ground early Thursday.
Authorities say someone reported the fire about 8 a.m., after it was already a total loss. The house was smoldering ruins by the time the first firetruck from the Lowndes County Volunteer Fire Department arrived, county fire coordinator Sammy Fondren told The Dispatch at the scene.
No one lived at the house, which is located at 1303 Henry Wells Rd, according Ryan Rickert, a captain with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities are still investigating what caused the fire, but Rickert said he doubts it was arson. Most of the house’s ruins collapsed into the basement, so the LCSO plans to dig there before determining the cause for certain.
