A Columbus woman was the only Mississippian to receive a pardon from President Barack Obama earlier this week.
Tietti Onette Chandler, formerly Tietti Chandler-Shleton, was convicted in 1999 for embezzlement of mail matter by a postal employee.
Chandler was indicted in 1998 for four counts of embezzling food stamps as a postal employee. She pleaded guilty to one count of stealing $225 worth of United States Department of Agriculture food coupons.
Judge Glen H. Davidson sentenced Chandler to three years of probation and 150 hours of community service.
A presidential pardon, according to the Department of Justice’s website, does not erase or expunge a conviction from a person’s record. However, the pardon does restore civic abilities, such as the right to vote, hold state or local office and sit on a jury. A pardon is also the only way to restore the right to bear arms to someone convicted of a federal felony.
