OKTIBBEHA COUNTY — It took less than 2 1/2 hours into the new year for Oktibbeha County to record its first shooting death of 2024.
Langston Jacques Spencer, 28, of Starkville, is charged with manslaughter in the death of Calvin Tate, 41.
Deputies responded to Tate’s home on Artesia Road at about 2:30 a.m., where they found him suffering from a single gunshot wound, according to information Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office released Monday. Tate was pronounced dead at the scene, and deputies arrested Spencer there as well.
OCSO Investigations Capt. Brett Watson told The Dispatch the victim and suspect knew each other. He would not release other details on the incident but said a manslaughter charge “fits the circumstances as we know them now.”
Spencer will appear in justice court Tuesday, the press release said. He is being held in Oktibbeha County Jail with bond set at $50,000.
