There are now three candidates in the mix for the Lowndes County District 3 supervisor seat.
Republican Tony Hannah has joined Chad Frasher and Andy Williams, also Republicans, in the contest to replace John Holliman, who is not seeking reelection.
Hannah is a native of Palmetto, Alabama, but has lived in Lowndes County since 1990.
He has several business interests, he said.
“I work at Lowndes Funeral Home as a funeral director assistant, and I’m going through the process now of becoming a funeral director,” he said. “I also own Barksdale Catfish Lakes out on Highway 182, which has been around since the 1950s, and we recently just purchased it.”
He also owns a bathtub refinishing company called Resurrecting Tubs and is retired from working in the automotive industry.
Hannah said he is running to try to make District 3 more attractive for younger people.
“West side has got industry, and we need something in District 3 to make our kids want to stay in Lowndes County,” he said. “We need entertainment for them. We need things to do so they stay out of trouble. There’s just a lot of things we need to offer we’re not offering right now.”
Thus far, four of the five supervisor districts are competitive. Republicans Michael Brock, Kevin Clark and Matt Furnari are running in District 1, where incumbent Harry Sanders is not seeking reelection; incumbent Incumbent Trip Hairston and challenger Brad Holliman, both Republicans, are facing off in District 2; and incumbent Democrat Leroy Brooks faces independent challenger Tiffany Turner in District 5.
District 4 Supervisor Jeff Smith is unopposed as of Thursday afternoon.
The deadline to qualify is Feb. 1. Primary elections are Aug. 8, and the general election is Nov. 7.
