A Columbus man accused of shooting and killing another man before he fled to Wyoming in 2021 was sentenced to prison Wednesday in Lowndes County Circuit Court, according to District Attorney Scott Colom.
Kingduron Baku Pyles, 22, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, Colom said. Judge Michelle Easterling sentenced Pyles to 40 years, 35 to serve and five suspended.
Pyles was convicted of killing Shad Reese, 23, of Macon. Officers found Reese’s body at 2:40 a.m. Nov. 1, 2021, in the front seat of a vehicle on 10th Avenue North near Union Academy. Investigators found one shell casing at the scene, former Police Chief Fred Shelton told The Dispatch at that time.
The murder happened as Reese was meeting Pyles to illegally purchase a firearm.
Pyles was arrested later that month in Shoshoni, Wyoming, after a Fremont County sheriff’s deputy responded to a disturbance at a motel.
Pyles reportedly told the deputy he was wanted for murder in Mississippi, then attempted to run to keep from being arrested.
After being arrested, Pyles was extradited back to Lowndes County.
