Well, y’all, if you know me, then you know how much I love some classic soul food.
That said, I am happy to report that Jones Restaurant, located at 112 Fourth St. S., will soon undergo a large renovation and reopen with its classic menu items, plus two or three new apartments upstairs, owner Laura Jones Chalmers said.
Chalmers told me she has been working with local developer Chris Chain since 2021 to draw up plans. For now, Chain and Chalmers do not have an exact timeline for the project but said they are actively seeking the necessary funds to start.
“The financing is going to really give us the timeline,” Chain said. “Once we get all that secure, we are going to go ahead and start working, and I think (we will start) cleaning the building out pretty soon.”
The restaurant closed in 2019 with plans to reopen soon but stayed shuttered because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Chalmers feels it is time to bring back the business, as well as add apartments upstairs, to maintain the legacy of the restaurant and Catfish Alley.
“I didn’t think of it as ever leaving (the restaurant) closed,” Chalmers said. “In the process of thinking about what happened with COVID and what was happening in the industry that changed it, I decided that I wanted to go in a new direction with Jones’ legacy, which is where I am now.”
Moving away from downtown, Angie Craddieth has found a home for her business, Heart 2 Heart Comfort Homecare, at 2240 Military Road, near Lion Hills Center.
Craddieth said she started her business in October, bringing non-medical assistance to clients needing extra care around the house, but she felt it was time to have a brick-and-mortar location.
“I chose to have my new office space because I wanted to make my business more legitimate,” she said.
Craddieth held a grand opening for the office July 7.
“We’ve had a lot of people apply for the business,” she said. “I have also been getting referrals from different people for their family members or friends for service. It’s been going pretty good.”
Moving to StarkVegas! It would appear that parents aren’t the only ones trying to make back-to-school time easier for their children.
Hibbett Sports, located at 874 Hwy. 12 W., is partnering with Adidas to host a Clips and Kicks back-to-school event Sunday. The event will feature free school supplies and haircuts, provided by Hibbetts’ hired barbers, from noon to 5 p.m.
“Our Clips and Kicks back-to-school events have become a great tradition that families look forward to each year, as they get ready for back to school,” District Manager Cordaro Gaines said in a press release. “We really appreciate our generous partners at Adidas for helping us bring this year’s event together for Starkville.”
Finally, my friends, just because a business closes, doesn’t mean it can’t come back in a new and exciting way.
Co-owner Yulanda Haddix said Big Dawgs Station 26, located at 804 Old West Point Road near the Parker-McGill Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram, closed earlier this month and will reopen as a food truck in mid-August.
Haddix said the owners made the decision to have more free time from the business while also having the opportunity to continue serving Starkville.
“We just got so busy with it, and we think that the food truck will work best,” she said. “We will also still do some catering as well.”
Well, that’s all, folks. Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
