Terry Lashaun Brooks, 42, who was on the run for several weeks, is back in custody in Lowndes County after being extradited from Missouri on Friday.
Brooks was indicted on accessory after the fact of murder and possession of cocaine. Brooks’s accessory charge stems from allegedly helping Kenny Armistad try to elude arrest following the December 2020 murder of Frank Edwards, 20, of Columbus.
Edwards was visiting friends on 12th Avenue South and was allegedly shot by Armistad after an argument broke out.
Brooks was arrested in August 2021 and held on a $900,000 bond. He was out on bond when LCSO began searching for him for additional charges.
According to Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins, Brooks was tracked down in Missouri and a lead was sent to the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force in Missouri.
The task force arrested Brooks at an apartment complex in St. Louis, but not before he tried to elude capture by leaping out of a second story window. Hawkins said a K9 had to run him down following the escape attempt.
Brooks faced drug charges in Missouri as well, and he would not waive extradition back to Mississippi.
“He wouldn’t waive extradition to come back to Mississippi because he knew once he got here, he’s not getting out of jail,” Hawkins said. “We had to get a governor’s warrant and have him extradited back. We went and picked him up (on Friday) and brought him back to Columbus to face the charges.”
Brooks is being charged as a habitual offender, according to Hawkins, and could face a hefty sentence.
He has 25 previous felonies and 18 misdemeanors.
“This is a perfect example of the importance of law enforcement partnerships,” Hawkins said. “By partnering with the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force in the northern district of Mississippi and in Missouri, we were able to take this dangerous suspect off the street. Brooks will now be held accountable for his actions.”
Brooks remains in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, where he will stay until trial.
