The Dispatch took home 21 awards, including third place in General Excellence in its class, during the Mississippi Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest Saturday.
The awards recognized work completed in 2024.
Page designer Matt Garner placed first and third in design and shared top honors with Publisher Peter Imes in the circulation class in the front page category. Imes also placed third among all multi-day publications for editorial page or section.
Managing Editor Zack Plair and Emma McRae placed first in the circulation class in the planned series category. Plair placed third among all publications for the Daniel M. Phillips Freedom of Information Award, while McRae also placed third in the circulation class for spot news story.
Lifestyles Editor Abigail Sipe Rochester took second and third place for in-depth/investigative reporting, as well as third place for personality portrait.
Former Mississippi State sports reporter Benjamin Rosenberg won two third place awards for sports news and sports feature story, respectively.
The Dispatch staff won second and third place in the special section category, third place for best news package and an honorable mention for planned series.
Other award winners included Deanna Robinson, second place, feature photograph; Philip Poe, third place (all multi-day publications), sports column; Slim Smith, third place (all multi-day publications), commentary column; and Austin Frayser, third place, feature photograph.
