CLAY COUNTY — A Clay County Detention Officer was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly providing contraband to inmates incarcerated at the county jail.
Tony Washington, 41, was charged with introduction of contraband into a correctional facility, a Thursday press release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff Eddie Scott said a joint operation between CCSO and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics that lasted several months revealed a scheme in which Washington was allegedly providing contraband to incarcerated individuals for profit.
“We started getting contraband into the jail, and we started tracking it down,” Scott told The Dispatch Thursday afternoon. “It was either coming in from outside or trustees bringing it in or the staff. You’ve just got to go through the process of elimination on it. And we did eventually track it down to a staff member.”
Scott said the scheme is still under investigation, and CCSO and MBN are working to determine the exact amount of contraband introduced to the jail.
Washington was being held at the Clay County Jail Thursday afternoon, Scott said. His bond was set at $10,000.
CCSO urges anyone with information on the burglary suspect to contact the Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151 or the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (662) 494-2896.
