With her parents going through a dark time, Vickey Wells decided to add a splash of color to their lives.
Wells recently returned to Columbus with her husband, Bill Wells, to visit her parents, Coolidge and Joyce Perkins. Coolidge Perkins recently had a gall bladder operation and ended up back in the hospital when a related infection developed. Joyce Perkins said she was hopeful her husband would return home from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle this week.
When Coolidge comes home, he”ll be greeted at his 620 Ninth St. S. home by a yard full of colorful items courtesy of Wells.
About a month ago, Wells and her mother were in the Perkins” shed when they stumbled across “tons of spray paint.”
It was then an idea popped into Wells” mind. It was time to paint; and the first thing she saw was a toddler-size ride-in toy Jeep.
“We started with the little Jeep. I said ”We”ll just use the spraypaint up.” Then we got carried away. Now everything”s tie-dye,” said Wells.
There are planting pots, garden tools, toys, fans, scaffolding and all manner of random objects all brightly painted and scattered throughout the front and backyard. A month after using up the remaining spray paint in her parents” shed, Wells pulled up Tuesday with a bag full of fresh cans of spray paint, ready to get back to work.
“Every time I turn around, she finds some more stuff,” Wells said of her mother. “Every time she pulls something out, I just paint it.”
She says the work-in-progress decorating is designed to give her parents something pretty to look at as they lounge on the porch after Coolidge comes home from the hospital. Joyce says she”s happy with the yard, but Wells says her mom isn”t free, yet, to simply sit and stare.
“She”s got a lot of plants to pot,” said Wells.
