Two defendants have been sentenced to prison time in relation to the 2023 murder of 17-year-old Tristianiz Calmes.

Jermarion Elliott, 17, was sentenced to 30 years for second-degree murder by an Oktibbeha County Circuit Court on Wednesday. His co-defendent Tatiyana Brooks, 24, was sentenced to 20 years for accessory after the fact of murder.
Sixteenth Circuit District Attorney Scott Colom called the case a stark reminder of the consequences that come when young people have access to guns and lack access to positive support systems.
“We cannot prosecute our way out of gun violence,” Colom said in a press release. “That’s why we must continue investing in education, mentorship, and conflict resolution programs that give our youth better options and brighter futures. Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive without suffering from gun violence or ruining their lives because of it.”
The case began July 26, 2023 when Oktibbeha County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a gunshot victim on Finley Drive.
Deputies found Calmes suffering a gunshot wound but still alive. He later died after being taken to OCH regional Medical Center.
Elliott and Brooks were both arrested the same day in relation to the shooting.
Colom said both defendants pleaded guilty to their charges. Evidence showed Elliot was the shooter and Brooks helped him evade arrest, he said.
