A Memorial Day shooting sent two bystanders to the hospital, including a child who remains in critical condition, Police Chief Joseph Daughtry told The Dispatch.
Officers responded shortly after 3 p.m. Monday to the 1500 block of 24th Street North in reference to shots fired. At the scene, they learned two victims suffering gunshot wounds – a 24-year-old mother and her 18-month-old child – were taken by personal vehicle to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.
Daughtry said the victims appear to have been bystanders caught in proximity to the intended target of the shooting. As of Monday evening, the mother was responsive, but the child remained in surgery.
Daughtry did not know the condition of either victim as of Tuesday.
Investigators have not yet identified a person of interest or suspect in the case, Daughtry said.
Anyone with additional information in this case is asked to call Columbus Police Department at (662) 244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
