Downtown, Waukaway Springs Bottling Company, 400 College St., has restored its building back to its former glory.
In the 1940s, the College Street building was used by the Brown Buick Company. President and owner of Waukaway Stephen Imes said the exterior renovations used reclaimed bricks from the building to revitalize its history. During the eight months of extensive renovations, Imes said he expanded the warehouse, added rental space for potential tenants and moved the store’s office to the front of the building — which was originally the Cadillac showroom for the Brown Buick Company.
“The main thing we wanted to do was keep it historical,” Imes said. “We were trying to keep it in the context of downtown Columbus.”
Imes is an owner of The Dispatch.
It appears the Fred’s Pharmacy on Alabama Street will close soon.
Back in September, Walgreens purchased patient files and inventory for 185 Fred’s Pharmacy stores in a $165 million acquisition. The Columbus Fred’s Pharmacy, at 115 Alabama St., will soon transfer its records to the East Columbus Walgreens by next week.
An employee, who wished not to be named, confirmed the Columbus store was a part of the deal that would close by next week. Corporate representatives from Fred’s or Walgreens could not be reached by press time.
In East Columbus, Your CBD Store opened earlier this month at 1118 Gardner Blvd. Though CBD products are sold at various businesses in town — mostly convenience stores — Your CBD is the first local business dedicated to selling only those products.
Medical treatments using plants has become a growing trend today, with more than a dozen stores throughout the Golden Triangle now offering CBD treatment for anxiety, depression, headaches, pain and other ailments. According to Web MD, CBD sales could be top $1 billion by 2020.
Owner Morgan DeFreese said her store offers THC-free products and oils made by Sun Med. The oils are extracted from hemp plants, which is a plant commonly used to make fabrics. If interested, DeFreese offers free samples for new customers trying to test the waters in natural treatment. Your CBD Store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
In Starkville, another trend continues to grow in the college town.
Cloud 9 Vapor Company, 602 S. Jackson St., opened earlier this month. After Oxford and Grenada, this is the e-cigarette company’s third location. It offers electronic vaporizers and flavors for customers interested in eliminating tobacco usage in favor of the nicotine vaporizers. E-cigarettes, or “vaping,” has grown in popularity with college-age adults. When walking through Starkville, you’re more likely now to see someone using a vaporizer rather than smoking a cigarette outside. Cloud 9 Vapor Company is open seven days a week from 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
State Floral, 301 University Dr., also opened earlier this month. The floral and gift shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Rumors of Larry’s Catfish and More, 605 S. Jackson St., closing down this past week appear now true. The business, which was located in front of Fred’s, has been demolished slowly over the past week. The Dispatch could not reach the owner by press time.
Back in Columbus, Yo’Bar, 1920 Highway 45 Suite 2, held its grand opening Thanksgiving night. You can look to ride the popular mechanical bull Monday through Thursday from 5-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon-1:30 a.m. and Sundays from noon-11 p.m.
