After spending roughly three months on the run, a Columbus man was arrested Thursday for allegedly burglarizing three Lowndes County businesses in July.
Brent Lane Spencer, 45, faces three counts of commercial burglary, a press release from Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said.
Spencer is accused of breaking into Sweetie’s Cafe and Dewie’s Bake Shop, both located on Wolfe Road in Caledonia, on July 6. The following day, he allegedly broke into the Old Country Store on Highway 12 in Steens. Cash was stolen from each location, the press release said.
Security footage captured during one of the burglaries helped detectives identify Spencer as the suspect. Deputies attempted to arrest him at his home on Spivey Road, but when they arrived at the residence, Spencer slipped out the back, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch.
Spencer spent the next three months on the run before returning to his home, where he was arrested Thursday by deputies and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.
Hawkins said Spencer is on federal probation for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. After fleeing from authorities and failing to check in with his probation officer, Spencer also faces federal probation violation charges, Hawkins said.
Spencer is being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center with a total bond of $30,000.
