STARKVILLE — The streets of the Cotton District will be abuzz this weekend as the 10th annual Bulldog Bash kicks off with food, fun and live music.
But the event also will give those in attendance the chance to give back to the community.
Festival patrons will be encouraged to take out their cell phones before headliner Third Eye Blind takes the stage at 10:30 p.m. for a text message campaign to benefit the United Way of North Central Mississippi. People can text message the letters “NCMISS” to the number 864833, which spells “united,” and donate $5 to the United Way.
Roughly $1,300 already has been raised for the United Way through the cell-phone campaign, which has taken place all this week, Mississippi State University Student Association President Blake Jeter said Wednesday afternoon.
“It”s a quick, easy, innovative way to give money to the United Way,” Jeter said. “Hopefully we can raise a couple thousand dollars.”
Festivities will begin 5 p.m. Friday on University Drive in the Cotton District, but if rain threatens to wash out the event, it will be moved to Humphrey Coliseum, Jeter said. The university is expected to make a decision on the possible move today after checking updated weather reports, he said.
However, the event as scheduled will begin at 5 p.m. and last until midnight, and feature everything from a pep rally, rock-climbing wall and inflatables to vendors, food and live music.
Music will begin 7 p.m. on the Rick”s Cafe stage, which will be set up on Page Avenue, just off University Drive. Red Hill City is scheduled to take the stage at 7 p.m., followed by Z-Flo at 8 p.m. and Jamie Davis and Soul Gravy at 9 p.m.
Music at the AT&T main stage on University Drive will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Sterling Y. The Flames will take the stage at 8:25 p.m., followed by Hot Chelle Rae at 9:20 p.m. and Third Eye Blind at 10:30 p.m. All ages are invited.
“It”s just going to be a lot of people having fun,” Jeter said. “We”re going to have lots of activities for everybody. You have R&B music, country music, upbeat music, a swarm of people walking around from stage to stage, having a good time. It”s a good, fun time to enjoy downtown Starkville the night before a football game and enjoy some good live music.”
Mississippi State”s football team is scheduled to play Louisiana State University Saturday at 11:21 a.m. in Davis Wade Stadium, on the MSU campus.
