A vehicle colliding with a pedestrian in Oktibbeha County was one of 16 crashes to which Mississippi Highway Patrol’s Troop G responded over the Memorial Day weekend.
The bicyclist was riding at about 8 a.m. on Highway 82 near Oktibbeha County’s border with Webster and Choctaw counties when a car came over a hill and hit him from behind, MHP Trooper Bryant Flake told The Dispatch.
The bicyclist was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo with “significant injuries,” Flake said, but was in stable condition as of Tuesday.
Over the Memorial Day enforcement period Friday through Monday, Flake said Troop G responded to 15 other accidents and made 16 arrests for driving under the influence in its 10-county district, which includes the Golden Triangle.
Flake did not provide the number of traffic citations made by MHP during the enforcement period.
Columbus Police Department over the holiday weekend made 12 arrests at seven checkpoints throughout the city, Chief Joseph Daughtry said. He did not specify whether any of those arrests were for driving under the influence or how many traffic citations CPD issued during that timeframe.
Sheriff Shank Phelps said the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office made nine arrests, including two for DUI, Friday through Monday. Deputies also issued 26 traffic citations.
Starkville Police Department Public Information Officer Brandon Lovelady told The Dispatch SPD made 12 arrests over the holiday weekend, none of which were for driving under the influence. The department also issued 126 traffic citations during the enforcement period.
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office did not provide its enforcement numbers to The Dispatch by press time Tuesday.
