Arrest Report 6/18/09

Three local men are in jail today after they were arrested this week on weapons theft charges by the Columbus Police Department.

The CPD Monday arrested Antonio Markell Gregory, 24, of 808 17th St. N in Columbus, and Bryant Reshawn Thompson, 23, of 1513 Fifth Ave. N. in Columbus, and charged each with felony counts of grand larceny. Gregory also was charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

After a brief search, police Tuesday also arrested 24-year-old Brandon Roland, 24, of 1122 15th St. S., No. 10, in Columbus, on one count of grand larceny.

The charges were the result of a CPD and Lowndes County Sheriff”s Office investigation into a Monday firearms theft from the CPD firing range near the intersection of College Street and Martin Luther King Drive.

“The joint investigation led to the recovery of some of the weapons at a location on the south side of town,” CPD Capt. Fred Shelton wrote in a press release.

Because the investigation is ongoing, authorities have released few details of the theft.

“This is an ongoing investigation, and the police department is still in the process of recovering other weapons that were taken,” Shelton wrote. “If anyone has information, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.”

Felony arrests

The following people were arrested on felony charges, according to reports released from the Lowndes County Sheriff”s Office:

  • James Cortez Evans, 20, of 1632 Churchill Road in Starkville, was arrested June 9 by the LCSO on one felony count of maiming while driving under the influence and misdemeanor counts of driving without a license and driving without insurance. He is scheduled to appear in court June 30.
  • Eric Jason Whitten, 28, of 2376 Morehead Road in Ethelsville, Ala., was arrested June 9 by the LCSO on one count of possession of methamphetamine.
  • Marcus Blake Ogden, 32, of 477 Craddeth Road in Steens, was arrested June 9 by the LCSO on one count of failure to report as a sex offender.
  • Linda Lanette Leech, 44, of 415 Dunn St. in Eupora, was arrested June 10 by the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics on one count of conspiracy to commit a felony.
  • James Carole Holland, 47, of 179 Sisk Drive in Nettleton, was arrested June 10 by the MBN on one count of conspiracy to commit a felony.
  • Susan Elizabeth Williams, 27, of 1539 North Lake Drive in Jackson, was arrested June 10 by the MBN on one count of conspiracy to commit a felony.
  • Douglas Wayne Kimble, 34, of 7003 Okolona Terrace in Okolona, was arrested June 10 by the MBN on one count of possession or sale of methamphetamine precursors.
  • Rex Allen Wilson Jr., 18, of 1415 Second Ave. N. in Columbus, was arrested June 11 by the CPD on one count of burglary of a dwelling. He is scheduled to appear in court June 18.
  • Shawn Antion Bradley, 15, of 95 Suggs Road in Columbus, was arrested June 11 by the LCSO on one felony count of simple assault on a police officer and two misdemeanor counts of failure to obey a police officer.
  • Patrick David Aris, 43, of 4013 Highway 373 in Columbus, was arrested June 11 by the LCSO on one count of driving under the influence. He is scheduled to appear in court June 30.
  • Tony Latarrence Lowe, 30, of 130 Preston Road in Columbus, was arrested Friday by the CPD on one felony count of violation of probation and misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, failure to provide proof of insurance and speeding. He is scheduled to appear in court July 1.
  • Michael Anthony Sparks, 19, of 806 Eighth St. S. in Columbus, was arrested Saturday by the CPD on one count of obstruction of justice.
  • Tyree Shaquille Sparks, 16, of 806 Eighth St. S. in Columbus, was arrested Saturday by the CPD on one count of armed robbery.
  • Michael Anthony Blue, 48, of 806 Eighth St. S. in Columbus, was arrested Saturday by the CPD on one count of obstruction of justice.

    • Noxubee whiskey still arrest

    A Meridian man was arrested Monday by the state Alcohol Beverage Control Board after investigators discovered the man was operating an illegal whiskey distillery near Shuqualak.

    Elbert Williams, 69, of 5286 Water Valley Road in Meridian, was arrested by the ABC and charged with one felony count of possession of an illegal still.

    The arrest came as the result of a six-month ABC investigation, which led ABC agents to the still at 8299 Shuqualak Road in southern Noxubee County.

    Agents seized a 500-gallon cooker, a radiator condenser, 82 gallons of moonshine whiskey and several other items after raiding the 10-barrel distillery. Agents also seized a 1994 Toyota Camry and $452 cash in the arrest.

    Because Williams previously had been charged with one count of sale of marijuana and another count of possession of an illegal distillery, he is considered a repeat offender and could face between five and 10 years in jail.

    As of Wednesday, Williams had posted a $15,000 bond and was awaiting his case”s presentation to a Noxubee County grand jury.
