The new year represents a new start for former District Attorney Forrest Allgood.
Allgood, who oversaw the Mississippi 16th Circuit District Attorney’s Office for 26 years, no longer serves in the position after losing to challenger Scott Colom in the November 2015 general election.
In the fall, Allgood told The Dispatch he didn’t intend to just settle down after leaving office.
As of yet, Allgood said he’s not sure what he’ll do long-term, but he’s started testing the waters to see how viable continued practice might be.
“Right now, I’m 100 percent doing whatever I can in that respect,” Allgood said Tuesday. “I am practicing law. Whether I continue to do so depends on if I have any customers.
“It depends,” he later added. “Things may take off and I may be busy as a beaver and I may like it and that may be what I do.”
For the moment, Allgood said he can be selective on what cases he decides to take. He said he’s open to hearing anything, and didn’t close the door on taking possible criminal cases.
“It is possible that I would take on a criminal case,” Allgood said. “I’m picking and choosing — it isn’t necessarily something that I’m going to do on a regular basis. If anybody wants to talk to me about one, I’ll be glad to talk to them. It won’t cost them a dime — I’ll be glad to sit down and talk to them and we’ll see where it goes.”
For now, Allgood said any interested people can reach him at his home phone listed in the phone book or social media.
To this point, Allgood said it’s hard to tell how well a potential practice might go for the long run.
“I’ve had a lot of well-wishers,” he said. “Well-wishers don’t necessarily translate into people wanting to pay you for your services.”
