No charges have been filed after a man was shot in the hand during a Friday dispute at Columbus Place, according to Columbus Police Department Public Information Officer Johannah Owusu.
On Friday about 7:50 p.m. Roy Wallace III, 22, and Coercion Hairston, 20, allegedly got into an argument in Rue 21 at Columbus Place, the former Leigh Mall, Owusu said. The two went outside and Wallace went to his truck to get a handgun.
Hairston saw the gun and got in his car to leave, Owusu said. Wallace opened the car door and Hairston grabbed an AR-15 that was inside the vehicle. They struggled over the long gun, which went off, wounding Wallace in the hand.
Hairston and his passenger left the scene and were stopped by patrol officers, Owusu said, while Wallace was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for treatment.
Both men were detained for questioning, Owusu said, but no charges have been filed at this time.
Owusu said investigators believe the shooting was likely in self-defense.
“(Wallace) definitely had no business trying to keep (Hairston’s) car door open,” Owusu said.
