Three college students, including two with strong ties to Columbus, have joined The Dispatch news staff as summer interns.
Caroline Beach, Violet Jira and Elijah Karriem began their internships in May and will report on a variety of topics until they return to school in the fall.
Beach is a native of Covington, Louisiana, and a 2019 graduate of Saint Scholastica Academy. She completed her junior year at Ole Miss this spring, serving as the social media editor for the student newspaper, The Daily Mississippian. She is majoring in integrated marketing communications and will be designing a new social media strategy for The Dispatch as well as reporting for the paper’s Lifestyles section.
Jira is a native of Clarksdale and a 2020 graduate of Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. She completed her sophomore year at Ole Miss this spring, where she served as news editor for The Daily Mississippian. She is a double-major in journalism and English. Jira will report on the city of Starkville and Oktibbeha County.
Karriem is a Columbus native and a 2020 graduate of the Mississippi School of the Arts in Brookhaven. He completed his sophomore year this spring at Jackson State, where he is in the Honors College, majoring in mass communications with minors in psychology and creative writing. He will serve as a general assignment reporter during his internship.
“We are very fortunate to have so many bright young journalists in our newsroom this summer,” said managing editor Zack Plair. “They have all shown a passion for community journalism, and we hope their experience here helps position them better for their future careers.”
