STARKVILLE — A Starkville High School student was arrested Thursday for bringing a weapon to school.
No shots were fired, and no one was injured.
SHS went on lockdown for about 15 minutes after school officials were alerted a student brought a gun to school, school district public information officer Nicole Thomas said.
School resource officers apprehended the student and recovered the gun after the student told officers where it was.
The male student took a photo of himself with a weapon and posted it to social media. In a screen shot of the post The Dispatch obtained, it shows the photo with the message, “WHERE U PLAY U GONE LAY” followed by “mean dat” and a vomiting emoji. The message also included emojis of a blood drop and gun.
The student tagged Starkville High School in the post.
He is being charged as a juvenile for possession of a firearm on educational property, and his case is being handled through Oktibbeha County Youth Court.
Starkville Police Department assisted the school resource officers and school leaders in the investigation, Thomas said.
All faculty, staff and students are safe after the incident, Superintendent Eddie Peasant said.
“The safety and security of our students, faculty and staff is our first priority,” Peasant said. “Our school district takes this situation very seriously and will adhere to the fullest extent of established district policies and procedures for disciplinary action.”
