A 13-year-old in Columbus has been hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries after being shot in east Columbus Tuesday night.
Columbus police responded to the shooting, which occurred in front of a house on McCrary Road at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday. According to Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton, the victim, his brother and one other person were walking down the street when the victim was shot in the leg.
The victim has been taken to a hospital in Jackson for more specialized treatment, Shelton said. He added the victim’s injury is not life-threatening.
Shelton said investigators believe the shooter is someone the victim knows and are currently questioning witnesses and one person of interest who has not been taken into custody.
The person of interest is a juvenile. If arrested for aggravated assault, Shelton said, that juvenile could be charged as an adult.
Shelton said the investigation is moving forward thanks to witnesses who are cooperating with police.
“That’s helping us and I always appreciate that,” Shelton said.
If anyone has any additional information they are asked to call Columbus Police Department at 662-244-3500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
