A national ballet company is bringing a faith-based production inspired by an infamous missionary story to Columbus next month.
Presented locally by Ballet Columbus, Ballet Magnificat! is scheduled to perform “The Call” on April 10 at 7 p.m. at Vibrant Church.
According to the company’s website, “The Call” tells the story of Christian missionaries Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Roger Youderian and Pete Fleming, who were killed in Ecuador by members of the Waorani tribe after attempting to bring Christianity to the isolated, amazonian tribe.
Several years after the death of the men, the widow of Jim Elliot, Elisabeth, and the sister of Nate Saint, Rachel, along with Elisabeth’s young daughter, returned to Ecuador as missionaries to live among the Waorani and continue their evangelical work.
Assistant Artistic Director Silas Fennema choreographed the piece and says that the performance combines dance and storytelling to depict themes of faith, forgiveness and sacrifice.
“My hope is that people would be encouraged by the life of the missionaries in this story,” Fennema said. “and that they would be moved to go out into the mission field – whether it be in their neighborhood or in the jungles of Ecuador.”
