Lamar County beats South Lamar in rivalry opener
VERNON, Ala. — The Lamar County High School football team needed one big offensive play Friday night.
Freshman tailback Alex Wheeler provided it.
Wheeler’s 1-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes, 40 seconds left in regulation helped Lamar County knock off arch-rival South Lamar 6-0 before a standing-room-only crowd at George Bell Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
Inaugural high school fishing championship Sunday in Columbus
Enthusiasm continues to build for the first Mississippi High School Fishing Championship.
Sponsored by the Student Angler Federation, the inaugural event is set for this weekend at Columbus Lake. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. today with registration and orientation at the Ramp Pavilion at Stennis East Bank Lock and Dam. A rules briefing will follow at 6 p.m. Fishing begins at the ramp at daylight Sunday, and culminates with a weigh-in at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
South Lamar, Lamar County meet in annual rivalry game
Bragging rights can be on the line on opening night.
