Brown’s strong outing lifts MSU to sweep of Oregon
STARKVILLE — After watching Dakota Hudson and Austin Sexton have success in the first two games of the Mississippi State baseball team’s series against Oregon, Daniel Brown wanted his outing to be just as spectacular.

The victory helped MSU (12-3-1) sweep the three-game series. It was MSU’s first sweep since 2014 at Auburn.

STARKVILLE — Ben Howland wishes it was January.
With the way the Mississippi State men’s basketball team has been playing, who can blame him? After MSU lost nine of its first 11 Southeastern Conference games, Howland said the Bulldogs have grasped his lessons and have responded by winning five of their final eight regular-season games.
Howland hopes that momentum continues at 8:30 tonight when 11th-seeded MSU (14-16) plays sixth-seeded Georgia (17-10) in the Southeastern Conference tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Collins leads MSU baseball team past South Alabama
STARKVILLE — Gavin Collins is finally healthy.
The Mississippi State junior suffered a hamate bone injury in his catching hand prior to the 2015 season that limited him to 35 games after he played in 48 games as a freshman. After playing catcher in first two years, he moved to third base last fall to protect his hand, but the transition has affecting his offensive production.
But Collins appears to be rounding into form.

The freshman was told he was going to be moved back to the infield, something he has played his entire life. But he was thrust back into the catching position after senior Josh Lovelady suffered a season-ending knee injury Feb. 26 against the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He was injured on the first play of the game and Stovall was inserted as the catcher. Although not the backup catcher, MSU coach John Cohen went with Stovall.

MSU gets fast start, batters Alcorn State
STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State baseball team needed a game where it could play a lot of players and get younger players some experience.
With the starters and veterans getting most of the playing time in the first two weekends, there wasn’t much time to get freshmen or backups playing time.
In a 14-0 victory against Alcorn State on Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field, No. 24 MSU used 22 players, including 15 position players and eight pitchers (Reid Humphreys pinch hit and pitched the ninth inning).
