STARKVILLE — Many thought Malik Newman would spend one year with the Mississippi State men’s basketball team.
A highly sought after recruit coming out of Callaway High School, Newman was one of a handful of incoming freshmen that had the label of being a “one-and-done player.” On Tuesday, he took one step closer to making that coming true, announcing his plans to enter the NBA draft. But Newman said he isn’t going to hire an agent, which gives him the option of returning to MSU next season.
Robson, MSU keep focus in mid-week rout
STARKVILLE — Even though it wasn’t a Southeastern Conference opponent, Jacob Robson was focused on Mississippi Valley State.
The Mississippi State baseball team lost both midweek games last week, something that didn’t affect them over the weekend, but it was a sore subject. Robson and the veterans made sure there was a good mind-set for this week’s non-conference opponent.
Robson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead No. 10 MSU to a 16-1 victory against MVSU on Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field.
Baker set to touch lives of Bulldogs
STARKVILLE — Brian Baker wanted to get back to coaching college football.
He began his career coaching in college, but he took an opportunity to coach in the NFL in the mid-1990s. After nearly 20 years in the NFL, Baker was anxious to get back to where he started.
When the Mississippi State football team lost David Turner to Texas A&M, Baker saw his chance. Three weeks ago, Baker realized his goal when MSU coach Dan Mullen him to be the Bulldogs’ new defensive line coach.
Hudson, MSU will be back on field tonight
STARKVILLE — Dakota Hudson didn’t win Friday night, but he was honored Monday.
The Mississippi State junior was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. He also was one of eight Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, Collegiate Baseball announced. He earned the honors after throwing a career-high nine innings and allowing one unearned run against Vanderbilt on Friday night.

STARKVILLE — Suzy Merchant had a feeling things weren’t going to be easy.
The Michigan State women’s basketball coach is friends with Belmont women’s basketball coach Cameron Newbauer, so she knew what to expect Friday morning in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and it bothered her.
True to Merchant’s fears, No. 13 seed Belmont didn’t make things easy, but No. 4 seed Michigan State used a combined 51 points from Aerial Powers and Jasmine Hines to beat No. 13 seed Belmont 74-60 on Friday in Humphrey Coliseum.

Last season, it would have been a different story, though, as the Mississippi State baseball team struggled to stop losing streaks and the momentum of midweek losses carried into the weekends.
After midweek losses to Eastern Kentucky and Oral Roberts, Robson and No. 15 MSU will try to show they can reverse that trend when they take on No. 5 Vanderbilt at 7 tonight in Game 1 of a three-game Southeastern Conference series in Nashville, Tennessee.
