A Columbus man is in custody at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center after allegedly slamming his car door on a sheriff’s deputy’s hand.
Officers with the Columbus Police Department arrested Calvin Butler, 42, of 374 Woodlawn Road, on Monday at about 7:15 p.m., following Butler’s run-in with the sheriff’s deputy.
According to Capt. Ryan Rickert with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy was off duty when he allegedly witnessed Butler attempting to steal items from a store on Military Road.
When the deputy approached Butler, Butler got into his vehicle and slammed the door on the deputy’s hand in an attempt to get away. Butler then prepared to drive off before the deputy freed his hand, Rickert said. The deputy was able to get loose, and Butler left the scene.
The deputy was not seriously injured, Rickert said.
Butler was charged with a misdemeanor contempt of court charge and one count of simple assault on a police officer. His bond has not been set.
