Home Store Furnishings, 311 Hwy. 12, in Starkville is slated to close.
Store owner George Keenan opened the local furniture and mattress shop about a decade ago but has decided to shutter and have a final liquidation sale this month.
“It has been an honor to serve this wonderful community and I am profoundly grateful for their support throughout the years,” Keenan said in a press release. “I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff, whose hard work, passion and commitment have been the backbone of our store.”
Throughout the sale, you can find up to 50% off inventory including accessories, wall art, rugs and more. You can check out the last bit of inventory with extended hours Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
With all our hot days lately, I’m starting to forget what cold weather even feels like. If you’re pining for winter days like me, check out The Guest Room on Main Street. The downtown speakeasy has a pop up bar, “Santa’s Surf Shack” now through Aug. 24. Check out the Christmas in July decor with a Christmas themed cocktail and food menu and you can almost feel the colder days to come.
Moving over to Columbus, we have a new restaurant in town.
Danny’s Restaurant and Catering, 2124 Bell Ave., is hosting its grand opening scheduled for next month. Owner Danny Osborrne is opening his second restaurant in Columbus with the first closing several years ago. Even though the restaurant just held its soft opening, he’s excited to see folks pack in and enjoy his food.
“I didn’t expect this kind of participation so early,” Osborne said. “(Customers) appreciate the food we serve and that we’re taking the time to serve the community.”
He’s ready to once again be a part of the community and offer folks homestyle southern food. Check out the soul food restaurant with a cafeteria setting 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.
Menu items include baked chicken, beef tips, chicken spaghetti, dressing, fried chicken, black eyed peas, mac’n cheese, pinto beans, yams and more.
“We wanted to give our customers a place to relax and have good food and a good atmosphere,” he said. “You have to walk in here to see what I’m talking about, but I’m proud of what we’ve built here.”
We’ve got more food news in Columbus with a family-run farm ready to offer farm-to-table beef and pork products.
R&R Farms LLC is a cattle farm located on Oswalt Road. Though not a new farm in Columbus, the family just began selling beef and pork to the public. Joel and Rachel Robertson, along with their children, have had livestock for about eight years and recently decided to start selling their products.
“We like to know what’s in our meat and to have a healthier choice,” Joel said. “Our business is run by our family and all six of our children have helped with the animals. It also teaches our children about responsibility and helps keep them active and learning to work.”
Check out R&R’s inventory online at rrfarms1.com. The Robertson’s will have whole, half and quarter beef and pork available for purchase.
Soon, Joel hopes for R&R products to be available at Four Seasons Farm and Garden on Alabama Street.
Also in town, a local bakery is making some major changes.
Nicole Huff, owner of Southern Flour bakery at 1920 Hwy. 45, is selling her baking inventory, decorations and store furniture. After nearly a decade of operation, the bakery’s last day in Columbus will be July 31. There is some good news though! Eventually, Huff will operate Southern Flour from her Aberdeen cannabis dispensary.
“There is a separate kitchen behind the dispensary,” Huff said. “It will take a while to get it up and operating but it makes more financial sense in the current economy.”
Southern Flour will have an inventory sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 3. She also intends to convert the Southern Flour building to a cannabis kitchen for her store, WIldflower Medical Dispensary, in Aberdeen.
By next summer, Financial Concepts will have a new office at 2980 North Frontage Road. Scott Ferguson, CEO, said he’s ready for the business’s next chapter.
“We’ve been in need of a larger space for a while now,” Ferguson said. “We originally had plans to relocate to a new facility in downtown Columbus, but unfortunately that never came to fruition. But as the old saying goes, when one door closes another opens, and we believe that our new location on Frontage Road is going to be an even better fit as we serve clients all across the Golden Triangle.”
