The first round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association softball state playoffs began over the weekend, with two teams in the Golden Triangle represented, West Point and Caledonia. Here’s a quick rundown at how the Green Wave and Cavaliers fared in the opening round of the postseason.
West Point 23, Jim Hill 0, MHSAA Class 5A playoffs, first round, Game 2, Monday
JACKSON — West Point softball advanced to the second round of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs after a dominant 23-0 run rule victory over Jim Hill in game two of a best of three first round series on Monday.
The Green Wave (10-7) scored 16 of its 23 runs in the first inning. This comes on the heels of Saturday’s 20-0 mercy rule win to begin the playoffs.
West Point now takes on Lafayette in the second round, with game one in Oxford beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.
West Lauderdale 10, Caledonia 1, MHSAA Class 4A playoffs, first round, Game 2, Saturday
CALEDONIA — Caledonia softball’s playoff run ended in the first round as the Cavaliers lost to West Lauderdale, 10-1, on Saturday in the second game of a best of three series in the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.
After a close 1-0 loss at West Lauderdale on Friday, the Cavaliers (15-10) managed just one run offensively, unable to keep the score close against the Knights.
Caledonia closed the season out on a three-game losing streak, outscored, 11-1, in its two playoff losses over the weekend.
