West Point is once again a buzzsaw.
The Green Wave are still undefeated and have claimed a region title with one week left in the regular season. West Point (9-0, 4-0 in Region 1-5A) is fresh off a 38-7 demolition of New Hope and will face Columbus this week.
“We’re in good shape as far as what we’ve done, but we’ve got to keep pressing,” West Point head coach Brett Morgan said. “We want to be peaking this time of year and just trying to stay healthy and keep focusing on us getting a little bit better each day. We’re getting into that time of year where it’s going to be a one-game season, one-week season.”
West Point has won back-to-back state titles, and the Green Wave are arguably even better this year. They made it through a challenging non-region schedule this year that included Tupelo, Starkville, Louisville and Noxubee County unscathed before outscoring opponents 180-33 in region play so far.
“I’m proud of the team and how they approached each and every game,” Morgan said. “We haven’t had a letdown, and that’s hard to do. I thought we were a little flat earlier in the year after a couple of the big wins that we had. But through the region we’ve been really steady, and I think we’ve come to work each and every day.”
In typical West Point fashion, the Green Wave are tearing their opponents apart on the ground. West Point has a wealth of options at running back and has rushed for over 2,700 yards as a team this season. West Point has been led by Quentin Thompson (660 yards, five touchdowns) and Jaylen Hall (646 yards, six touchdowns).
“A bunch of unselfish guys,” Morgan said. “It starts with Quentin Thompson. He’s a senior and he’s explosive and just an incredible football player. He plays all over the place for us: running back, quarterback, slot receiver, outside wide receiver. He’s a phenomenal senior leader. … Our kids are unselfish, and they’re more worried about ‘we’ and winning and how can our offense be at its best than they are their own personal stats.”
