In local prep sports action on Tuesday, New Hope and Lowndes County each captured volleyball wins on the court to halt their losing streaks and earn some positive momentum while
Starkville Academy and Oak Hill Academy both added another tick in the softball win column.
Volleyball
New Hope (4-11) swept visiting Lamar County 3-0 to end a three-game skid, and West Lowndes (2-6) defeated Columbus (1-7) 3-1 in Columbus for their first win in their last six tries. New Hope is back on the court at 6 p.m.Tuesday at Pontotoc. West Lowndes, which played at Okolona yesterday, hosts Tupelo Christian Prep at 6:30 on Tuesday.
Caledonia saw its two-game winning steak come to a close Tuesday against Fayette County in a 3-1 loss.
The Cavaliers took the first set 25-22, but fell 25-15 in the second set, 25-18 in the third and 25-24 in the fourth. The Cavs (15-5-2) played at Lafayette yesterday and host Pontotoc at 6 p.m. on Sept. 4.
Starkville’s losing streak grew to three games on Tuesday as it suffered a 3-0 setback at Region 2-7A foe Oxford. The Chargers claimed the first set 25-16, the second set 25-23 and pulled out a narrow 26-24 win in the third set for the victory.
Starkville (5-10-1, 0-3) hosted Clinton yesterday and is back on the court at 6 p.m. at Murrah.
Starkville Academy softball 23, Heritage Academy 0
The Volunteers utilized 11 hits and 10 walks issued by Patriot pitcher Aubrey Grey to seize a 23-0 shoutout over MAIS District 2-4A foe Heritage Academy in Columbus.
Starkville Academy (9-2, 2-0) plated 10 runs in the first inning, nine in the second and four in the third while pitcher Azleigh Slivka threw a no-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk. Piper Graves led the team with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Molly Ingram belted a triple for two RBI, Emmi Miller had a triple and a single for two RBI and Ella Kate Heflin hit a double and single for four RBI. Piper Sowell and Lauren Adkerson also each contributed a hit.
The Vols hosted Carroll Academy yesterday and are back at home at 6 p.m. Monday hosting Winona Christian.
Heritage (0-10-1, 0-5) hosted Oak Hill Academy yesterday and is back in action at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday hosting Winston Academy.
Oak Hill Academy 15, Washington School 7
The Raiders used two home runs to help score a combined nine runs in the third and fourth innings to rally from a 5-1 deficit and hammer Washington School 15-7 in Greenville.
Katelyn Lewis smacked a three-run home run to knot the game at 5-5 in the third inning, and Mary Crosley Coker delivered a two-run shot to left field in the fourth inning to give Oak Hill Academy the lead for good.
The Raiders, who were outscored 5-1 in the first inning, added one run in the fifth and tacked on four more in the seventh. Molly Aycock and Kaelyn Pennington each had three hits that included a double. Aycock also had four RBI. Molly Caroline Brand had two hits, including a double, and Sally Rhea Chaney also had two hits. Parker Higginbotham and Lilly Reed also each had one hit.
Pennington pitched all seven innings from the circle and gave up 10 hits and four earned runs with one strikeout.
The Raiders (10-5, 3-1) played at Heritage yesterday and host Carroll Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
