COLUMBUS — From the opening kickoff to the final whistle, West Lowndes controlled every phase of the game Friday night.
Behind a relentless rushing attack and a physical defense, the Panthers overpowered Okolona 50-12 to continue their season.
Okolona opened with the ball and moved it early behind running back Tre’Vuan Vance, but West Lowndes quickly took control. The Panthers forced a fumble near midfield and wasted no time turning it into points. Running back Jayklen Lucious powered through the middle for a four-yard touchdown, and quarterback Kadon Burton followed with a successful two-point run to make it 8-0 less than three minutes into the game.
The Panthers’ defense struck again on the next drive. Defensive end Tylan Brewer blew through the line for a sack that forced a punt, setting up the offense near midfield. Burton connected on a deep pass to move into the red zone, and running back Kylan Ellis capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run. Linebacker Antonio Brown added the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 16-0 late in the first quarter.
Okolona finally broke through when quarterback Natheon Rodgers found wide receiver Jaiydence Herron for a 29-yard touchdown. The Chieftains cut the deficit to 16-6, but West Lowndes immediately regained control.
Lucious continued to carry the load for the Panthers, punishing tacklers and finding space behind a dominant offensive line. Early in the second quarter, he slipped through two defenders for an 18-yard touchdown run to make it 22-6. The defense followed with another stand as Brewer and Brown each delivered back-to-back tackles for loss.
When the Panthers regained the ball, they marched 88 yards in six plays. Lucious capped the drive with his third touchdown of the half, bursting through a gap from 24 yards out. Burton added another two-point conversion to make it 30-6 heading into halftime.
Head coach Anthony King praised the team’s physicality and focus in the trenches.
“The guys came out and they executed,” King said. “They gave up the middle all night and we took it. They came out, ran hard, and dominated the front all night.”
The second half started the same way the first ended. On the third play of the drive, Lucious broke free for a 45-yard run, and Alexander Colbert finished it off with a 15-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 36-6.
Okolona answered with its biggest play of the night when Vance broke loose for a 90-yard touchdown run, but West Lowndes’ response was immediate. Two quick carries by Ellis set up another scoring run from Lucious, who powered in from 18 yards out for his fourth touchdown.
King had nothing but praise for his senior running back.
“He is the heart and soul of the team,” King said. “He is a great football player. He leads and wins hard. It is hard for me to take him off of the field.”
Late in the third quarter, Lucious added one more highlight with a 48-yard touchdown sprint, and Colbert converted the two-point run to make it 50-12. The defense sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with interceptions from Christopher Elder and Trence Robertson to put the game away.
Even after a dominant performance, King emphasized that there is still room for improvement as district play continues.
“I would like to see the passing game improve and I would like to see my secondary get better,” King said. “We cannot give up long throws like that, and I would like my receivers on the same page as my quarterback.”
West Lowndes showcased balance, toughness, and discipline in all three phases. The Panthers imposed their will from start to finish and looked every bit like a team ready to make a statement in district play.
West Lowndes will travel to face 1A district leader Calhoun City next Thursday.
