Prep softball and volleyball action continued late last week as teams in the Golden Triangle continued the grind of their early season slate.
In softball, Starkville Academy and Oak Hill Academy both continued their winning streaks as each team earned a blowout victory while Heritage Academy was dealt its third loss of the season. In volleyball, no area team managed to earn a win.
Oak Hill Academy 7, Kirk Academy 0
Oak Hill busted open a scoreless contest against Kirk Academy in the fifth inning by plating six runs then added one more in the sixth for a 7-0 shutout on Friday in West Point.
Kaelyn Pennington held Kirk to just three hits during her seven innings of work from the circle, and she fanned three batters. OHA’s offense backed her up with seven hits and six RBI from the plate. Mollie Caroline Brand led the team with two hits and an RBI, and Pennington, Molly Acock, Mary Crosley Coker, Lily Reed and Sally Rhea Chaney each produced one hit. Croker led the team with two RBI.
The Raiders (5-1) go for their sixth straight win today at Winona Christian. The game begins at 6 p.m.
Starkville Academy 15, Hebron Christian 3
The Volunteers raced out to a 13-0 lead after two explosive innings of offense and had no problem in besting Hebron Christian 15-3 on Thursday in Starkville.
Led by a single, a double and four RBI from Sarah Montgomery, the Vols (4-1) plated eight runs in the first inning, five runs in the second and one run in each in the third and fourth innings to extend their winning streak to three games. The Eagles used a single by Skylar McIlwain and three SA errors to tack on three runs in the top of the third inning.
Lauren Adkerson had a double, single and three RBI, and Elin Jewell also hit a double. Molly Ingram, Ella Kate Heflin, Piper Sowell, Emmi Miller and Addi Smith each had a single.
Ingram didn’t allow a hit over the first two innings from the circle and struck out four Eagles. Piper Sowell came in for relief and closed the final two innings by giving up only three hits.
The Vols are back on the diamond today looking to extend their winning streak as they host Pillow Academy at 6 p.m.
Heritage Academy, 0, Wayne Academy 19
Heritage surrendered 10 hits and 15 RBI and the Patriots’ season-opening slide grew to four games on Friday as the team suffered a 19-0 run-rule shutout by the visiting Jaguars.
Wayne got the scoring started in the first inning with seven runs and added 10 more in the second and two in the third. Aubrey Grey worked the first 2.2 innings for Heritage (0-4) and relinquished eight hits for 10 runs (two earned) with six walks. She also struck out three batters. Lola Sullivan came in to finish the game and gave up two hits and nine earned runs with three walks. Kelsey Perkins went 2-for-2 at the plate for Heritage’s only hits of the game.
The Patriots have an opportunity today to get into the win column when they play at Carroll Academy at 6 p.m.
Volleyball
Caledonia’s volleyball squad was dealt a 3-0 defeat at Ripley on Thursday that halted the Cavaliers’ winning streak at one game.
The Tigers claimed the first set 25-12, the second set 25-18 and the third 25-11. The Cavs (5-2-1) have an opportunity to bounce back at 7 p.m. today when they play host to Starkville.
Starkville managed to take one set from Northwest Rankin on Thursday in a 3-1 loss in Ridgeland.
After a tight 25-23 first-set loss, the Yellow Jackets (2-4) grabbed the second-set victory 25-22 but fell 25-17 in the third set and 25-19 in the fourth. Starkville, which played at Tupelo yesterday, are back on the court today at Caledonia for a match that begins at 7 p.m.
Amory squeaked out two close set wins over New Hope Thursday in Amory as it handed the Trojans a 3-0 defeat for their sixth loss of the season.
The Panthers took the first set 25-23, the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-19.
New Hope (0-6) hosts Neshoba Central at 6:30 p.m. today, still looking for its first win of the young season.
