Swimmers of Swim Columbus showed out in their state championship events Oct. 18 at their respective high schools with two participants taking home gold medals and even a few new state records.
Caston McKellar, a senior from West Point, placed first in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.8, which set a new Class II state record. He also placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time 22.24.
Caledonia freshman Izzy Clark took home first in the girls 100-yard breaststroke in a blazing time of 1:13.63, which toppled the previous record by over three seconds. She added another medal around her neck in the 100-yard butterfly, capturing silver with a 1:04.05 finish for second place.
Michael Robinson, a seventh-grader at Caledonia, also swam in the state meet and placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:14.48.
McKellar and Clark both joined Swim Columbus members Alexa Welch and Ana Welch of Heritage Academy as state champions in the pool. The MAIS state meet was held in September, and Alexa notched first place in the 50-yard breaststroke, and Ana seized gold in the 100-yard individual medley and in the 25-yard breaststroke.
Swim Columbus head coach Beth Clark said seeing some of her swimmers perform so spectacularly for their individual schools has been wonderful to see.
“The first-place finishes, I mean, it’s a pretty big deal,” Beth said. “And setting the new state records, that’s something to be really proud of for the kids. They’ve worked hard in their club swim and now that they get to represent their schools, I mean they represented their schools extremely well, but swimming year-round through Swim Columbus definitely helps them … We’ve always told our swimmers to go out, swim a personal best and give 100% effort and good things will happen.”
