STARKVILLE — A source confirmed Tuesday morning that Mississippi State defensive line coach David Turner is leaving the program for a position at Texas A&M. His official title with the Aggies is unknown and Texas A&M has not made the hire official.
Turner was promoted to assistant head coach this offseason after three other defensive coaches took other jobs. With his departure, MSU will have an entirely new defensive coaching staff for the 2016 season.
Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Manny Diaz took the same position at the University of Miami, safeties coach Tony Hughes was hired as the new Jackson State coach and cornerbacks coach Deshea Townsend left for the Tennessee Titans.
MSU coach Dan Mullen hired former Southern Cal coach Peter Sirmon to replace Diaz, former Iowa State coach Maurice Linguist to replace Hughes and former Louisville coach Terrell Buckley to replace Townsend. Buckley will also be the recruiting coordinator, a position Hughes served in.
Turner coached at MSU from 2007-09 under both Sylvester Croom and Mullen, but left for Kentucky after Mullen’s first season in Starkville. He returned to the Bulldog program in 2013 and has coached the last three seasons with the MSU.
Texas A&M will be Turner’s 12th different school to coach at since 1986.
