Mississippi University for Women forward MG Chamberlain has been selected the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the organization’s national office announced.
Chamberlain’s weekly honor is the third for a player from The W. Rokila Wallace won the national award twice this season.
“A year ago I didn’t know if I would be able to play the game ever again,” Chamberlain said. “The past three years I constantly questioned myself on if I should even try coming back.”
Chamberlain had a banner week for The W. In games against Crowleys Ridge and Pensacola Christian, the Brighton, Tennessee, native averaged a double-double with 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds. She also dished off 2.5 assists per game. She led the Owls in scoring in both games.
For the season, Chamberlain is averaging 12.1 points and 5.1 rebounds, scoring in double figures in 10 of 14 games and netting two double-doubles. At 5-foot-10, she is second on the club with 86 3-point field goals, shooting nearly 35 percent from beyond the arc.
“Honestly, I get a little emotional when I talk about MG,” Owls coach Drew Johnson said. “Knowing her story is to know the meaning of passion, faith, dedication and perseverance. People talk about those pretty words all the time, but she’s lived them.
“There just aren’t many people in the world like her and I can’t say enough about the job she continues to do for us every single day. Every athlete that’s injured or is currently fighting their way back from an injury needs to hear her story. There is always a way back, and no matter how treacherous the path is, it will always be worth it in the end.”
