Starkville native James “Cubby” Harris was inducted into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday at the organization’s 19th annual ceremony at Hinds Community College. Harris, an all-conference standout at defensive back for Starkville High School, played two seasons at East Mississippi Community College.
Harris lettered in football, basketball and track and field at Starkville but starred in football. He spent three years on the varsity Yellow Jackets football team from 1973-75, helping the team win back-to-back Little 10 Conference championships in his junior and senior years.
As a senior, Harris was a team captain and earned All-Conference honors, but was not recruited. He arrived in Scooba in 1976, asking for a tryout from first-year head coach Randall Bradberry, and won a spot on the team.
Harris was inducted into EMCC’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2009, recognizing his accomplished career on the field. In two seasons, he earned NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American, all-conference and team MVP honors, recording 11 interceptions as a sophomore.
Harris is the owner of James “Cubby” Harris Painting Company in Starkville and continues to stay involved in sports as a role model and active sponsor of local youth teams.
He is a member of EMCC’s Development Foundation Board of Directors and received the school’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 2013.
